March of Dimes

Quick Add Users

When you need to add users quickly to a lab environment or even production, here is a quick snipet to do so in PowerShell:

1..100 | ForEach { Net User “User$_” MyPassword=01 /ADD /Domain; Enable-Mailbox “User$_” -Database }

BlackBerry Express

RIM has published their press release announcing the latest version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express – now a free product, license free, and able to integrate right on the mail server, certified for VMWare, and compatible with Small Business Server! :)   Going to be an exciting ride these next few years.  Consumers are finally able to get real, stable security built into their devices.

Will Book Publishers Climb in Bed with Apple?

It will be interesting to see come March when the Apple tablet ships if book publishers will be competitevly competing with Kindle like devices. Seems Apple was able to change the rules to the “dead” music era and make money, but they made money for themeselves, not the artists. Is the best bang for the buck going to go to Apple again in the publishing world or is this something that the publishers will make serious cash on? The unveiling tomorrow should look quite interesting!

BES 5.0 SP1

The new BES 5.0 SP1 now uses Exchange Web Services (EWS), thankfully!  Hopefully as Microsoft says, this is an end to the whole MAPI subsystem as we know it :)

We’ll have to wait and see, I have not yet updated our BES server to this Service Pack as I’m still working with the vendor trying to get some log dumps.  It’s coming soon though.

Speed Tests

Just did a quick speed test to see what the “basic” version of Road Runner was.  Not too bad for their basic service!  The upload could be improved, but hey!  What do I need to upload?  Everything I need runs in the cloud already :)

BlackBerry Biometrics in trackpad

A new speculation that RIM may be patent(ed/ing) a new technology to be built into their future BlackBerry devices where a touchpad, used for input to the device, and replaces both the trackball and legacy trackwheel, will double up with some advanced software to provide Biometric input.  This will allow users to do fingerprint reading to their device to perform such services as unlocking and locking their device, distress messages, wow, I can only think the possibilities are endless.  This can be a proxy to a VPN client, WiFi access, even general username/password access to websites.  Think of this technology doubled with Bluetooth will be an awesome leap for enterprise security.

It’s going to be an interesting ride!  If you think about the resolution of a touchpad, it is really only looking for touch sensitive information such as is a finger on the touchpad or not.  Will be interesting to see what the hardware and software combination looks like!

iPhone losing exclusivity?

There has been lots of speculations around the net that on Wednesday, January 27th at the Apple conference a possible announcement could be made that AT&T will no longer hold exclusitivity to the iPhone.  What does this mean to other carriers and the enterprises wishing for a manageable and secure smartphone?
